You can easily heighten your aerial practice (literally) by doing poses above a knot tied in the aerial yoga hammock. Many of the poses performed above the knot are poses we already practice at a lower height. Being above the knot adds an extra challenge for kids since they are higher off the ground. Children will need sufficient strength to be able to safely pull themselves up into the knotted hammock. It is of the upmost importance that your child is confident moving in the hammock, has good grip strength, and someone is available to tie a knot and supervise the poses.

What are above the knot poses?

Above the knot poses are aerial yoga poses you do above a knot tied in the aerial hammock. When tying the knot make sure there is a sufficient tail below the knot, you don’t want it coming untied when your child is performing poses on it.

What are the Benefits of Above the Knot Poses?

Hanging out above the knot requires increased focus and concentration as you are higher off the ground. It builds strength and executive function. Above the know poses provide an extra challenge, but mostly it’s just fun!

Here are a two of our favorite aerial knot poses:

Monkey Pose in the Aerial Hammock

  • Make a knot, make sure it is tied tight and has a tail.
  • Climb above the knot, by placing one foot in the tail that hangs down.
  • Sit above the knot in swing position.
  • Grasp ALL of the hammock in your hands.
  • Look up at the ceiling.
  • Take your legs out wide as you lean back.
  • Circle your legs around the OUTSIDE of the hammock.
  • Hook your feet behind the hammock.
  • Feet must stay hooked behind the hammock at all times during this pose.
  • To come out, tuck your chin.
  • Unhook feet.
  • Roll up.

Tree House in the Aerial Hammock

  • Make a knot, make sure it is tied tight and has a tail.
  • Climb above the knot, by placing one foot in the tail that hangs down.
  • Sit above the knot in swing position.
  • Turn sideways and crisscross your legs.
  • Start to spread the fabric out along your back until it is spread out enough to sit in.
  • Next spread the hammock out in front of you until you are in a tree house.
  • Take some deep breaths and notice how you feel.

Practicing poses above the knot can build confidence by adding a challenge to poses the have become easy at a lower height. Being above the knot allows for greater depth and exploration of poses. Want to learn more fun ways to move in the aerial yoga hammock? Let’s hang out above the knot – in an aerial yoga class or aerial camp!
