Youth Aerial Yoga and Occupational Therapy
Aerial yoga drops are one of the best and scariest movements in the aerial yoga hammock. An aerial drop is when you wrap yourself in the aerial yoga hammock in a pose and free fall to a new pose. Drops require strength, courage, stamina, and a growth mindset. Safety is very important – drops are only taught in intermediate to advanced aerial classes. Participants must have prior aerial experience and the strength to invert and safely drop.
There are many kinds of drops in aerial yoga hammock. The set-up of the initial pose is very important for safety. It takes focus and concentration to make sure the wraps are correctly placed before the drop occurs. Every time I teach a drop, I check the wraps on each child and spot them. Even small simple drops require core strength, which is why we incorporate drills for developing core strength into the aerial warm-up activities.
Swordfish to Gazelle Drop is a mini drop I teach in our mixed level classes once kids are comfortable with fundamental skills in the aerial yoga hammock. This drop requires climbing to goddess pose, moving to swordfish, hooking the knee across both aerial poles and then letting go to float into Gazelle pose.
The idea of free falling to a yoga pose may seem scary, but it is fun! At Mindful Child Aerial Yoga in Kansas City, I train the foundational pose and spot drops. Safety is always a priority in our kid’s aerial yoga classes in Kansas City. Aerial yoga drops are exciting aerial yoga poses that are integrated into our intermediate and advanced classes in our Kansas City based studio.
