Installing an aerial yoga hammock in your home can be a daunting task. Different ceilings will require different materials. Additionally, some ceilings may not be structurally sound to support an aerial yoga hammock, which will require adding extra supports. When hanging an aerial hammock from your ceiling, make sure to have a licensed contractor inspect and hang it. The contractor needs to understand the hammock will be moving and that additional force will be placed on the hammock when doing certain aerial tricks such as flips. This excessive force requires a higher load and should be considered when looking at the structure.
Different types of Ceiling Structures
Steel Beams. These are the strongest and safest aerial supports. You can use a clamp that is specifically designed for the i-beam or wrap daisy chains directly to the beam.
Wooden Beams. These are the most common types of beams found in homes. They are often concealed under plaster or sheetrock. A stud detector can determine where they are located; however, the contractor needs to into the attic or space between floors to determine to if the beam is strong enough to be structurally sound.
If beams are exposed you can wrap daisy chains directly to the beam, but again make sure the beam is structurally able to handle the force that will be applied to it.
Concrete Beams. These beams will add complications as they require special masonry bolts/anchors and a more robust drill.
Other Considerations When Installing an Aerial Yoga Hammock
Six-Foot Radius. The aerial hammock will require at least a six-foot radius to safely perform poses and tricks.
Padded flooring is needed; especially when a child is using the hammock.
Supervision. ALWAYS supervise children on the hammock. It is recommended adults have someone close by as well when practicing advanced poses. One wrong twist or wrap can result in you being stuck in the air or falling out of the hammock. Trust me – I’ve fallen from ceiling height when learning a new drop and been stuck in the air several times when learning a pose, but because I had someone spotting me I wasn’t injured.
Check your Hammock. Regularly check the integrity of the hammock. Hammocks can easily tear if jewelry or zippers are worn in them.
For Mindful Child aerial hammocks, the Black Diamond slings that create the ponytails can slip over time or after being cleaned. Always check ponytail length to ensure it is 12 inches and rewrap as needed. For more information, see our aerial hammock owner video library.
