Several yoga variations have developed in the last few decades, such as goat yoga, puppy yoga, and paddle board yoga.  Aerial yoga is one of those hybrid styles of yoga. It combines traditional yoga poses with an aerial hammock; some practices even throw in elements of circus arts and gymnastics. The combination creates not only impressive pictures, but a whole-body workout, that inspires you to try new poses and tricks.  Aerial yoga has many benefits; it can enhance a traditional yoga practice, adding an element of playfulness and fun into your fitness regimen.

What is Aerial Yoga in Kansas City?

Aerial yoga is yoga performed in an aerial hammock or sling. The aerial hammock is hung from a support system and typically hangs at hip height above a cushioned floor. For kid’s aerial yoga the hammock is lower to the ground until they reach more advanced levels.

The aerial movements you do in aerial yoga class depends on your skill level and age. Class typically begins with a warm-up, then aerial poses are taught. The class ends with a guided relaxation while laying in the aerial hammock.

What are the Benefits of Aerial Yoga?

Strength. Aerial yoga requires and builds strength.  Depending on the pose, core and upper body strength are needed to not only get into the pose, but to hold it and exit safely.

Executive Function.  Aerial poses are typically more complicated than traditional yoga poses. There are many steps that require working memory, self-control, and problem-solving. Aerial yoga is a great way to enhance executive function.

Happiness. There is a multitude of research linking exercise to health. Exercise releases neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, which are important for our emotional well-being.

Aerial yoga is a great way to introduce kids to mindfulness and acrobatic movement. It can serve as a introduction to yoga, gymnastic, and meditation. A consistent practice of aerial yoga and mindfulness has many benefits.  At Mindful Child Aerial Yoga in Kansas City, we offer kid’s aerial yoga classes, aerial camps, and even a kid’s yoga teacher training.

Let’s hang out!
